Court Announces Decision on Nasrin Sotoudeh’s Hijab Case

Wednesday 20 April 2011

Change for Equality: Following three court sessions, the 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court found Nasrin Sotoudeh guilty on the charge of "Displaying Lack of Hijab." Sotoudeh has been sentenced to pay a fine of 500,000 Rials (about $50); a decision that can be appealed.

The charge of "displaying lack of Hijab" was brought against Sotoudeh because she appeared without official Hijab in a video intended as an acceptance speech for an international human rights award. Sotoudeh was barred from leaving Iran to accept her award in Italy and therefore prepared her acceptance speech in the video that was shown at the ceremony.

Sotoudeh was recently sentenced to 11 years in prison because of her human rights activities. It was incorrectly reported in some news websites that 5 years of the 11-year sentence was due to the Hijab case. This however was not true since the court had not announced a decision about the Hejab case at that time.
