Maryam Bidgoli and Fatemeh Masjedi Served with Prison Sentence via Phone

Saturday 1 January 2011

Change for Equality: Following the serving of court papers about the implementation of the prison sentence of Maryam Bidgoli and Fatemeh Masjedi to their lawyers, these two women’s rights activists were contacted by the office of implementation of sentences on Wednesday December 29. Officials from the office of implementation of sentences informed the two Campaign activists that they should introduce themselves to the office on Saturday January 1, 2011 to begin serving their 6 month mandatory prison sentence, otherwise face arrest. The lawyers representing these two women’s rights activists are asking the Judiciary to order a Judicial review of the sentence issued in these cases, with the hopes of preventing the imprisonment of the two Campaign activists based in Qom.

It should be noted that Bidgoli and Masjedi were arrested by security officers in Qom on 7th May 2009. Two weeks later they were released on a bail order of approximately $20,000 each. They appeared in court on 4th August 2010 on charges of spreading propaganda against the State through feminist activities and received one year prison terms each. Additionally, Fatemeh Masjedi was fined approximately $200 and Maryam Bidgoli approximately $100. The two activists appealed the court’s ruling. The appeals hearing was held on December 7, 2010 at the Third Branch of the Qom Province Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeals simply reduced their prison sentence to six months.

It should be noted that in the past Campaign activists facing charges for their involvement in the Campaign have either been acquitted in trial, in appeals or have received suspended sentences.
