Kaveh Kermanshahi Human Rights and Campaign Activist Remains in Prison

Family Observes Iranian New Year Outside Prison

Saturday 3 April 2010

Change for Equality: Kaveh Ghasemi Kermanshahi, Human Rights and Campaign activist based in Kermanshah was arrested on February 3, 2010. He is being held at a prison managed by the local office of the Ministry of Intelligence in Kermanshah. His temporary arrest order was renewed on March 3. Kaveh’s contact with his family has been limited since he was detained nearly 2 months ago. After great insistence on her part, Kaveh’s mother, Ms. Farangis Davoodi, was able to visit him in prison for fifteen minutes on March 3.

Kaveh’s family and friends had hoped that like many other social and political activists who had been detained in recent months he too would either be released from detention or be allowed temporary leave on the occasion of the Iranian New Year (March 21, 2010).

When he was not released for the New Year, Kaveh’s family, friends and other social activists in Kermanshah gathered outside the detention center in Kermanshah, where they observed the Iranian New Year. Their observation included the traditional New Year’s spread (the Haft Seen).

It should be noted that Kaveh’s lawyer, Mostafa Ahmadian has been denied access to case files pending against Kaveh and despite a letter from the Judge mandating that the family be provided a visit with Kaveh prior to the New Year, the local office of the Ministry of Intelligence has refused to facilitate such a visit.

After observing the New Year, Kaveh’s family and friends and other social activists gathered outside the prison, went to the local cemetery to pay their respects to the family of Kianoosh Asa a student who was killed in post election protests. Their visit coincided with Asa’s birthday. His family marked the occasion with flowers and a cake at the cemetery.
