Mahboubeh Karami Contacts Family from Prison

Change for Equality: Mahboubeh Karami, contacted her family by phone for the second time on Wednesday March 10, from prison. Mahboubeh Karami had contacted her family by telephone earlier in the week. In a phone conversation with her brother, Mahboubeh explained that she had been transferred to Evin prison, section 209, which is managed by the Ministry of Intelligence. She also explained that she is currently being interrogated in relation to recent developments in Iran.

Mahboubeh Karami is an activist with the One Million Signatures Campaign who was arrested for the fifth time on March 2, 2010. Prior to her arrest security officials searched her home and confiscated personal property. Prior to this arrest Mahboubeh Karami was arrested in on four other occasions. The first and second of her arrests were related to student protests in July 1999. Her third arrest was on the sidelines of a protest in June 2008, during which she spent seventy days in detention and was charged with actions against national security. Mahboubeh was arrested a fourth time in March 2009 along with ten other women’s rights activists who intended to visit families of prisoners on the occasion of the Iranian New Year. She spent 13 days in detention in relation to this arrest. It should be noted that she has been acquitted on all charges in the four arrests.
