Release of Mahboubeh Karami Darkened by Her Mother’s Passing

Wednesday 8 April 2009

Change for Equality: Just one day after the release of Mahboubeh Karami from detention, her mother passed away. Mahboubeh Karami was released on bail on April 7, 2009 and immediately went to visit her ailing mother in Iran Mehr Hospital in Tehran. Ms. Masaebi, Mahboubeh’s mother, had been suffering from cancer, and had been transferred to hospital 2 days after the arrest of her daughter, along with 11 other women’s rights activists, on 26 March, 2009.

Members of the Campaign, including the mother’s committee of the Campaign, took turns caring for Mahboubeh’s mother in the hospital and keeping her company. This morning though, despite a tough fight, this courageous mother passed away after her final visit with the daughter she loved so dearly.

Ms. Masaebi will be laid to rest on Thursday April 9, 2009. A memorial service (khatm) will be held in her home on Friday April 10, 2009, from 4-6 pm.

We, at the site of Change for Equality, extend our deepest condolences to our friend and colleague, Mahboubeh and her family during this difficult period and wish them strength and patience.
