Mothers Demand Freedom of Mahboubeh Karami

Tuesday 12 August 2008

Change for Equality: On Sunday August 11, 2008, mebers of the Mothers Committee of the One Million Signatures Campaign in Tehran, along with some members of the Mothers for Peace, in a letter addressed to Iranian officials requested the release of Mahboubeh Karami a member of the One Million Signatures. These mothers wrote and submitted letters to this effect to the Ayatollah Shahroudi, Head of the Judiciary; Samira Khaleghi, Head the of the Women’s Commission of the Judiciary; Mr. Jamshidi, Spokesperson of the Judiciary; and the Judiciary’s Task Force for Human Rights. The letter requested the release of Mahboubeh Karami, who was arrested while passing a demonstration on Vali Asr Avenue, on a bus, on June 13th, 2008. While the charges against her are unclear and despite the fact that she has not committed a crime, she remains in prison, because her family cannot post the high bail amount required for her release (appx. $110,000). The Mothers have announced that they will continue to follow the case of Mahboubeh Karami and continue to push for her release.
