Saturday 28 June 2008

Change for Equality: In a telephone contact on Wednesday June 25, Mahboubeh Karami, women’s rights activist and member of the Campaign for Equality, told her mother that she has been transferred to the Women’s Ward of Evin Prison. She is being held in a cell with another 24 women arrested during the same demonstration in front of Mellat Park. According to Mahboubeh Karami, officials have gradually been releasing those arrested during this protest and some have been released on bail. They have been charged with actions against the state. Mahboubeh’s situation remains unclear.

Mahboubeh Karami was on her way home from Tajrish, when she was arrested along with other female passengers of a bus, passing a demonstration in Mellat Park, on June 13th. Approximately 90 women were arrested on that day, most of whom have since been released. Mahboubeh was unaware of the demonstrations taking place in Mellat Park, and was arrested while passing by on the bus. These demonstrations were not related to women’s rights or the Campaign.
